Course description

This illustration class is divided into 5 parts:

1. Creating a character

  • Preparatory sketches to create a character
  • Exploration of the process of creating a character from its description in a literary text.
  • The importance of the choice of style and principles of stylization.
  • Realization of the sketches of a character inspired by his description in the text.
  • Work with the text and various references.
  • The art of sketches.
  • Presentation of the proportions of the human body and their stylization.
  • Presentation of the character in different emotional states, inspired by the description in the text. The importance of detail.

Materials:
11 / 8.5 inch white paper, pencil at the mine

2. A character in colour

  • Exploration of the process of making a character in a final illustration.
  • The art of concept and colours.
  • Choice of style depending on the literary context.
  • Realization of a character from the sketch.
  • Choice of the medium.
  • The different stages of the realization and the special technical requirements.
  • Choice of the concept of colours.

Materials:
Canson paper (white and coloured), support for paper, gouache, India ink, coloured pencils, adhesive tape, watercolour brushes N: 1, N: 0, N: 0.2, N: 0.3.

3. Creating a composition for an illustration

  • Presentation of examples of different kinds of illustration.
  • The importance of the choice of text and different techniques for producing an illustration.
  • Work with the text.
  • The importance of the choice of theme and concept.
  • Realization of sketches of a figurative composition inspired by the text.
  • Structure of the composition.
  • The different kinds of the composition of the illustration.

4. Creating Sketches of a Decor in Illustration

  • Exploration of the different stages of the creation of a sketch of decoration inspired by its description in a literary text
  • Realization of the sketches of a decoration.
  • Perspective notions
  • Creating different planes using contrast.

5. Creating the atmosphere in an illustration.

  • Learn to create the mood of a decor.
  • The importance of the choice of colours.
  • Choice of concept and style.
  • Creation of depth by the principles of perspective.
  • Realization of a colour decoration inspired by a literary text.
  • The different stages of the realization of the atmosphere and the depth.
  • The importance of detail.
